JAMMU/SRINAGAR: This year’s annual Amarnath Yatra will remain temporarily suspended on both routes from August 23, due to a decline in pilgrim footfall and track restoration work, officials said on Sunday.

To everyone’s dismay, the ice Shivalingam in the cave shrine has melted completely — much earlier (in July) as compared to previous years — because of hot weather.“Due to the considerable reduction in the flow of pilgrims and the urgent repairs and maintenance of the Yatra tracks at vulnerable stretches being undertaken by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), movement of pilgrims on both tracks leading to the Holy Cave is not advisable,” Shree Amarnath Shrine Board said.“The Chari Mubarak (Holy Mace) shall proceed via the traditional Pahalgam route, marking the culmination of the Yatra on August 31,” an official said, adding: “This year, the Yatra has seen overwhelming footfall with more than 4.4 lakh pilgrims having obtained darshan at the Holy Amarnath shrine so far.”This year’s 62-day annual pilgrimage had commenced simultaneously on both routes — Pahalgam (Anantnag district) and Baltal (Ganderbal district) — on July 1 and shall culminate with the Chadi Mubarak ritual.
