KATHMANDU: In an effort to lessen traffic congestion, ‘pick and drop& system has been put in place in Koteshwar & one of the busiest areas of Kathmandu Valley.The system — that prevents public vehicles to wait at stops for a longer time — has been put into effect from Sunday as per the agreement reached among the Traffic Police, Kathmandu Metropolitan City and transport entrepreneurs.Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Basanta Kumar Pant, chief of Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, said the new measure was mooted to reduce traffic pressure at Koteshwar.It would be easier for vehicles entering Kathmandu from Kavre via Jagati with the enforcement of the system at the main thoroughfare of the city, he added.Koteshwar has witnessed terrible traffic congestion which often happens when public vehicles wait for passengers for a long time.
Saroj Sitaula, general-secretary of Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs, expressed his belief that the system would be effective in lessening traffic at Koteshwar Chok and easing public movement.Earlier, the system was put in place at Jamal, Old Bus Park, Shahid Gate and Lainchaur in the federal capital city.
According to the Traffic Division, the system would be gradually enforced in other parts of the Valley as well to keep traffic management smooth.
