Sensex, Nifty today: The Sensex crossed the 38,450 mark and the broader Nifty hit 11,400Domestic stock markets rose on Tuesday with the S-P BSE Sensex index gaining more than 250 points, tracking gains in Asian peers.
The broader National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty benchmark index climbed to as high as 11,408.35 in late morning deals, up 67.2 points from its previous close.
The Sensex index added as much as 255.01 points to touch 38,469.48on the upside.
Gains in banking, financial services and automobile shares pushed the markets higher however losses in information technology and metal counters limited the upside.
Hindustan Unilever shares rose1.90 per cent in intraday trade, a day after the fast-moving consumer goods major reported a21.18 per cent rise in its standalone net profit in the quarter ended September 30.
Analysts awaited financial earnings from IT major Wiprofor cues.
Meanwhile, official data showed that consumer inflation hit a 14-month high of 3.99 per cent in September, close to the Reserve Bank of India's medium-term goal.Market Breadth Favours GainsMarket breadth was positive with 945 stocks trading higher on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) as against 885 moving lower and 129 remaining unchanged.
On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), 838 stocks advanced, 789 declined while 495 were flat.Market breadth is an indicator in which the number of stocks trading higher is compared with that of those moving lower.Indian Oil, Eicher Motors, BPCL, Asian Paints Top GainersThirty three stocks on the 50-scrip Nifty index moved higher.
Indian Oil, Eicher Motors, Bharat Petroleum and Asian Paints - up between 1.31 per cent and 2.25 per cent - were the top percentage gainers on the 50-scrip index.Top Nifty Gainers/LosersPharma, Consumer Goods, Financial Sectors Lead GainsIn percentage terms, pharmaceuticals and consumer goods sectors led the gains in the markets.
