A fire at the Moove lubricant factory on February 8, 2025, led to an oil spill in Guanabara Bay, highlighting ongoing risks tied to industrial activity near sensitive ecosystems. The factory, located on Ilha do Governador in Rio de Janeiro, caught fire in its production area.
This prompted an 18-hour firefighting operation.
Emergency crews worked tirelessly to prevent the flames from reaching 12 tanks containing 30,000 liters of lubricant oil.No injuries were reported, but oily residues were detected in the bay shortly after the fire was extinguished.
The Instituto Estadual do Ambiente (Inea), Rio de Janeiros environmental agency, responded quickly by activating a contingency plan to contain and collect the spilled oil.Teams deployed barriers around the site to limit contamination while monitoring air quality due to thick smoke from the fire.
Authorities credited the swift response with preventing broader environmental damage.
However, concerns remain about long-term impacts on Guanabara Bays fragile ecosystem.Oil Spill Hits Guanabara Bay Following Fire at Rio Lubricant Factory.

Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire and assess any regulatory breaches. In short, this incident underscores the challenges of balancing industrial growth with environmental protection.
Guanabara Bay, already burdened by pollution from urban and industrial sources, supports local fishing communities and biodiversity. For policymakers and businesses, it serves as a reminder of the critical need for stricter safety measures.
It also highlights the importance of sustainable practices in industrial operations.
