British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a $2 billion (1.6 billion) agreement on March 2 to strengthen Ukraines air defense capabilities. The deal enables Ukraine to purchase 5,000 lightweight multirole missiles (LMMs) from Thales, a defense manufacturer based in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
This initiative reflects the UKs strategic commitment to supporting Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression. The missiles, with a range of over six kilometers, can target drones, vehicles, and boats at speeds 1.5 times the speed of sound.
Designed for use across land, sea, and air platforms, they will protect critical infrastructure and bolster Ukraines ability to counter missile and drone attacks.Thales will triple production capacity under the contract, creating 200 new jobs and sustaining hundreds more in its supply chain.
This represents the largest-ever contract for Thales in Belfast and a significant boost for the UK defense industry. The agreement is financed through UK Export Finance (UKEF), allowing Ukraine to draw from a $4.4 billion (3.5 billion) credit facility established last year for purchases from British industries.U.K.

There are ambitions to reach 3% in the next parliament.Escalating Tensions and Diplomatic MovesThis announcement follows a week of heightened tensions in the conflict.
Russia recently launched its largest drone attack on Ukraine since the war began three years ago, deploying over 200 drones in one night.Meanwhile, diplomatic friction emerged after a contentious meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and United States President Donald Trump at the White House.Trump criticized Zelensky for what he described as insufficient gratitude toward United States support.
He raised concerns about Americas long-term commitment to Ukraine. In response to these challenges, Starmer hosted a European summit in London.
Leaders from France, Germany, and other nations gathered to discuss coordinated efforts for peace. The UK and France committed to working on a ceasefire plan that includes European security guarantees and United States involvement.
Starmer positioned Britain as a key mediator between Europe and the United States. He aimed to secure lasting peace through military strength and international collaboration.
This $2 billion deal underscores Europes growing leadership in supporting Ukraine as uncertainty clouds United States policy toward the conflict.
