The Kremlin stated Tuesday it still prepares to honor a 72-hour ceasefire unilaterally proposed by President Vladimir Putin during todays Victory Day celebrations, despite Ukraines rejection of the truce.Putin bought the ceasefire from midnight on May 8 through May 11 to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Unions success over Nazi Germany in World War II.President Putins effort on a short-term truce during the vacations remains in force, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov informed reporters. However, he included that Russian forces would instantly give an appropriate reaction if Ukraine released attacks throughout the ceasefire period.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has actually dismissed the plan, explaining it as a hollow gesture ahead of Russias yearly Red Square military parade on May 9.
Ukraines Foreign Ministry warned that foreign soldiers marching in the parade along with Russian servicemen would be seen as sharing duty for Russias war.To march side by side with them is to share responsibility for the blood of murdered Ukrainian children, civilians and military, not to honor the victory over Nazism, the ministry said in a statement.United States President Donald Trump appeared to safeguard the proposed ceasefire on Monday, saying: It does not sound like much, but its a lot if you knew where we started from.In March, Putin turned down a United States -proposed ceasefire that Zelensky had supported.AFP contributed reporting.
