In an exclusive interview with Estado, General Toms Ribeiro Paiva, Chief of the Brazilian Army, emphasized deepening strategic ties with China and BRICS nations.He outlined his upcoming visit to China, focusing on science, technology, and military capabilities.During the Artillery Day celebrations at the 11th Air Artillery Group, General Paiva expressed his desire to visit all BRICS countries.He has already visited India, but noted that the conflict in Ukraine has deterred a trip to Russia.Despite United States -China tensions, he anticipates no issues with the visit, citing Brazils significant trade with China and a pragmatic foreign policy approach.Additionally, General Paiva discussed reactivating the Special Commission on Dead and Disappeared Persons, suspended under former President Jair Bolsonaro.He emphasized the importance of this humanitarian effort to fully understand past events.On military ethics, General Paiva reiterated the non-politicization of active-duty forces.He also praised his relationships with President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva and Defense Minister Jos Mcio.He acknowledged financial challenges in funding the Armed Forces, yet lauded the troops commitment, especially in response to recent disasters in Rio Grande do Sul.Furthermore, General Paiva detailed strategic interests in cooperating with China, specifically in renewable energy, cyber defense, and advanced missile systems.The General highlighted the importance of anti-access and area denial strategies, widely employed by several nations including China.He also assured ongoing support for indigenous communities, such as the Yanomami, dismissing any allegations of neglect.Paiva detailed the Armys continuous efforts in these regions.Conclusively, General Paiva looked forward to promoting women to general ranks by 2026, reaffirming the Brazilian Armys dedication to its constitutional duties.He stressed maintaining political neutrality and focusing on operational responsibilities nationwide.
