Brazil

The Brazilian government, led by President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva, is moving forward with two legislative proposals to regulate digital platforms.
These efforts come after the collapse of the Fake News Bill in 2023, which faced strong opposition from major tech companies.Recent events, such as Metas rollback of hate speech policies and a surge in misinformation about Brazils Pix payment system, have intensified the urgency for regulation.Officials see these developments as threats to public trust and democratic processes.
The Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) is crafting one proposal focused on consumer rights. It aims to improve transparency by requiring platforms to clarify terms of use and identify paid content.
Additionally, it mandates the proactive removal of harmful material, such as incitement to violence or child exploitation.Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance is developing a separate proposal targeting economic and competition issues.
This plan would empower Brazils antitrust authority, Cade, to address monopolistic practices and impose stricter rules on dominant platforms.Brazil Advances Digital Platform Regulation Amid Rising Tensions with Tech Giants.

The Justice Ministry seeks broad oversight covering all digital services, including streaming and fintechs.
Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry advocates for a narrower focus to ensure smoother legislative approval. Both proposals aim to address growing concerns over big techs influence while drawing inspiration from international frameworks like the European Unions Digital Markets Act.With legislative momentum building, these proposals could reshape Brazils digital landscape.
The stakes are high for investors, policymakers, and tech firms navigating this evolving regulatory environment.
