Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Thursday the country will review tariffs on Chinese imports.
Her declaration follows Trumps exemption of Mexican products from his 25% tariffs on goods covered under the USMCA trade agreement. We need to review the tariffs we have with China, Sheinbaum stated at a press conference.
She highlighted devastating impacts on Mexicos domestic industries.A large part of Chinese products entering Mexico caused the collapse of our textile and footwear sectors, she explained.
The potential policy shift aligns with Trumps vision of creating a North American Fortress against Chinese goods.US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed Mexico proposed matching Washingtons tariffs on China.
Trump recently increased Chinese import tariffs from 10% to 20%.Mexico already imposed compensatory quotas up to 17.99% on Chinese footwear last September following an anti-dumping investigation.

Chinese fast fashion platforms like Shein and Temu create particular challenges. They ship merchandise valued under $50 without paying import taxes through the de minimis mechanism.
Industry experts report millions of products enter Mexico annually without proper taxation or regulatory compliance.Mexico-China Trade Imbalance Sparks TensionsMexico maintains a severely imbalanced trade relationship with China.
For every dollar Mexico exported to China in 2023, the Asian nation sold 11.4 dollars to Mexico.
This disparity continues to worry Mexican officials and industry leaders.Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao criticized countries wielding the tariff stick and disrupting international trade order.
He promised Beijing would support Chinese exporters against these measures.Mexican tariffs on Chinese goods could reshape North American trade relations and global supply chains.
The move represents a diplomatic victory for Trumps protectionist vision and marks a strategic shift in Mexicos approach to international trade.
