Venezuelas National Armed Forces (FANB) have pledged to defend the disputed Essequibo territory. This move follows Guyanas auctioning off of oil blocks in the same area.
Venezuela protested this action at the 78th UN General Assembly. The country also accused the United States of wanting to control Essequibos oil.Guyana received eight bids for 14 oil blocks in December 2022.
ExxonMobil was among the bidders.Georgetown maintains it can engage in economic activities anywhere within its sovereign land or sea areas.President Nicols Maduro expressed willingness to talk with Guyanas leader, Irfaan Ali.
They aim to restart discussions about the disputed region.Venezuela and Guyana have disagreed on Essequibos ownership for over a century.

(Photo Internet reproduction)In 1966, both nations tried to resolve the issue peacefully through an agreement.
However, Guyana filed a case in 2018 at the International Court of Justice. They want the court to validate an 1899 ruling that grants them full territory control. In summary, both nations are making strong claims on the Essequibo region.
Ongoing tensions show that a resolution is far from simple.Yet, talks between leaders hint at a potential path to agreement. Background Esequibo Border DisputeIn the Essequibo dispute, Venezuelas military commitment adds a layer of complexity.
This strongly signals Venezuelas resolve to assert its territorial claims. It also potentially escalates the situation, given that military might can be a game-changer in any diplomatic dispute. In this context, its crucial to note that Venezuelas military stance might deter foreign investment in the contested region, especially in its oil reserves.Additionally, military involvement can put diplomatic negotiations under strain, making peaceful resolution more challenging. Therefore, while the military commitment may strengthen Venezuelas position internally, it raises concerns internationally. It suggests that all options, including military ones, are on the table for Venezuela, which could alter the dynamics of any future negotiations or resolutions.
