A lighting system short circuit at Jorge Chvez International Airport on June 2 disrupted travel for over 10,000 passengers.Consequently, this incident sparked questions about the new airport terminal in Lima.Developed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications and Corpac, this $2 billion project aims to modernize Limas airport infrastructure.The new airport will accommodate 40 million passengers annually.
Additionally, it features a second runway and a new control tower.Remarkably, it can withstand earthquakes of up to magnitude 9.
This project marks the first airport of its kind in South America.Limas New Mega-Airport Set to Replace Jorge Chvez in December 2024.

Notably, its design, inspired by a hummingbird, honors the Nazca lines.The project plans to be completed by December 2024.
Therefore, once operational, the old Jorge Chvez Airport will close.This change will enhance capacity and efficiency, align with international standards, and improve the user experience.Arturo Vera, CEO of Lima Airport Partners (LAP), suggested repurposing the old airport for commercial use.He announced the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) plan.
This plan involves training over 15,000 employees.Transformative DevelopmentsA commercial area will develop along Avenida Elmer Faucett due to a new Metro Lima station, he explained.The existing Costa del Sol hotel will support this commercial zone.
Additionally, the runway area will offer essential services like aircraft maintenance and cargo handling.The ORAT plan is critical for a smooth transition to the new terminal.
Training over 15,000 workers ensures a successful move.The last flights will arrive at the current airport by 12:45 PM on December 18th.
By 2:30 AM the next day, operations will end.Coordinating and training staff is vital for an efficient and safe move.
LAP is taking all necessary measures to ensure an orderly transition and maintain operational continuity.This new development promises to transform air travel in Peru.
Consequently, it positions Lima as a major hub in South America.The enhanced capacity and modern facilities will boost tourism and economic growth.
Ultimately, this development marks a significant milestone for the region.
