On July 16, 2024, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced the end of Germanys military cooperation with Niger.
She cited unreliable relations with the current authorities in Niamey.By the end of August 2024, around 40 German soldiers stationed in Niamey will leave.
The Niamey air transport base will also be vacated.This decision follows the withdrawal of French troops in late 2023 and the planned departure of American forces by September.Since a military coup in July 2023, Niger has been under the control of a junta, straining relations with Western powers.Disagreements over the legal immunity of German soldiers hastened Berlins decision to withdraw.
