This Saturday, the Workers Party (PT) and the Liberal Party (PL) will finalize their candidates for Brazils October municipal elections.PT, led by President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva, will contest in 14 capitals, whereas PL, led by former President Jair Bolsonaro, targets 15 capitals.Direct battles are anticipated in only nine of the 26 state capitals.
PT is shifting its strategy from fielding numerous candidates to forming strategic alliances. This aims to reduce Bolsonarisms impact and prepare for the 2026 national elections.
PT supports PSOLs Guilherme Boulos in So Paulo, moving away from nominating their own candidate there.PL plans to secure 1,500 mayoral posts, significantly up from their 348 wins in 2020.
They continue to promote a high number of candidacies to strengthen their future congressional presence.Tight Race in Brazil: PT and PL Rivalry Intensifies in Major Cities Belo Horizonte.
