The Brazilian Supreme Court has reached a decisive majority in a significant ruling concerning former President Jair Bolsonaro. On December 6, 2024, the court denied a motion from Bolsonaros legal team, which sought to remove Justice Alexandre de Moraes from overseeing an investigation into an alleged coup attempt in 2022.This investigation focuses on events that transpired during Bolsonaros presidency.
Specifically, it examines efforts to obstruct the inauguration of Luiz Incio Lula da Silva.Bolsonaros defense argued that Moraes should recuse himself due to a potential conflict of interest.
They claimed that Moraes was part or directly interested in the case. However, the courts president, Justice Lus Roberto Barroso, who is also the cases rapporteur, dismissed these claims.
He stated that the mere assertion of Moraes being a victim does not automatically disqualify him from leading the inquiry.Bolsonaro Faces Serious Allegations as Court Upholds Moraes Role in Inquiry.
