Russias President Vladimir Putin shows willingness to discuss a temporary truce in Ukraine if progress toward a final peace settlement advances.
Russian officials conveyed this offer during talks with American counterparts in Saudi Arabia last month.President Donald Trump threatened new sanctions and tariffs against Russia on Friday.
Russia is absolutely pounding Ukraine on the battlefield right now, Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He urged both nations to get to the table right now, before it is too late.Trump suspended weapons supplies and intelligence sharing with Ukraine earlier this week.
This action followed a heated confrontation between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House last Friday.Steve Witkoff, Trumps special envoy, announced that American and Ukrainian officials will meet in Saudi Arabia next week.
The idea is to get down a framework for a peace agreement and an initial ceasefire, Witkoff told reporters on Thursday.Zelenskyy will travel to Saudi Arabia on Monday to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
His team will stay afterward to collaborate with American representatives.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova rejected temporary ceasefire proposals just a day earlier.Firm agreements on a final settlement are needed.
Without all that, some kind of respite is absolutely unacceptable, she declared.
European leaders responded with plans to boost defense capabilities.European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed loosening budget rules for defense spending.
EU members committed to invest approximately $863 billion in defense over the next four years.Any potential agreement will likely require Ukraine to make significant concessions.
Experts predict Ukraine will refuse to recognize occupied territories as Russian, reduce its army, or officially abandon NATO aspirations.
