Unique meeting at Election Commission today on fresh date for LG surveys

The Election Commission will assemble an unique meeting in Colombo at around 10.30 a.m
this morning (March 07) to select a fresh date for the 2023 Local Government election which was at first set up to be hung on March 09
All officials who are associated with the election procedure, including the Secretary to the Finance Ministry, the Government Printer and
the Inspector-General of Police have been informed to attend this meeting.Although at first set to be announced last Friday (March 03),
revealing the new election dates was postponed following a meeting held by the members of the Commission that day.The post ponement of the
decision came in the background of an order provided by the Supreme Court in this regard today, instructing that a date for the 2023 surveys
be announced before 09 March.In the meantime, a different conference of the members of the election body will satisfy later today for a
discussion on the local government election.Further, a group of parliamentarians of the opposition are likewise expected to convene a
meeting at the Election Commission properties today for the very same reason.Meanwhile, MP M.A
Sumanthiran said 09 legislators representing the opposition have turned over a letter to the Election Commissions chairman urging him to
make certain that the city government election is held prior to March 20.
