[India] - Rusty knife in neck, Mumbai male flights to health center; lives to tell the tale

INSUBCONTINENT EXCLUSIVE:
NAVI MUMBAI: A 30-year-old Sanpada businessman, stabbed by his brother while asleep on June 3, rode his motorcycle to a hospital 1km away
with the rusted knife piercing his neck and, almost miraculously, survived with little physical damage.Tejas Patil underwent a 4-hour
surgery at MPCT Hospital for the removal of the knife from his neck and fixing of damaged blood vessels
He was shifted to a regular room on Monday, still coming to grips with the fact that the knife had narrowly missed many major blood vessels
supplying blood to the brain.Sanpada businessman Tejas Patil, who was stabbed in the neck by his 28-year-old brother Monish over a family
dispute on Saturday, told TOI from his hospital bed, "I am still shocked that Monish tried to kill me."Patil alleged that Monish had a
drinking problem and said that he was accompanied by his friend from Turbhe Mahesh when the attack took place.Patil said that he had
previously made Monish a partner in his water tanker supply business, but said, "he did not work seriously due to the bad company he
keeps".A criminal offence that deals with the 'attempt to murder' charge under Indian Penal Code has been registered at Sanpada police
station and a hunt for the assailant has been launched. At MPCT Hospital, doctors were all praise for Patil's presence of mind and his
decision to rush to the hospital with the knife still piercing his neck.Patil also called up his father-in-law, Bhupendra Singh, to inform
him about the stabbing
His wife was at her parents' home in Ulwe where she had gone for a pregnancy-related checkup.Dr Prince Surana of MPCT Hospital said, "As
soon as Patil came in, we carried out a CT scan of the neck, brain and thorax to check the extent to which the knife blade had pierced the
neck and caused damage.''A team of a plastic surgeon, neurosurgeon, interventional radiologist and heart surgeon was assembled immediately
to ensure that the knife was removed without damaging arteries and nerves that could've caused permanent disability or death.Doctors also
noticed some bleeding from the posterior part of the neck and they decided to check the vertebral artery which supplies blood to the
vertebra and spinal cord
They realised that this artery had been damaged.Dr Surana said, "Luckily for the patient, the vertebral artery on the left side provided
enough cross-flow and maintained circulation to the brain/cerebellum
Or else, he would have suffered a stroke or ischemia (lack of blood flow) to the brain vessels."Patil was on mechanical ventilator support
for a day before being shifted to the general ward
He is out of danger and will be discharged after two days.Senior inspector of Sanpada police station, Bapurao Deshmukh, said that they
recorded Patil's statement in the hospital on Sunday where he named the accused."According to the hospital's medical report, we have
invoked section 307 of the Indian Penal Code that deals with the charge of 'attempt to murder' against the accused person," said senior
inspector Deshmukh.
