Assam flood circumstance still grim, IMD problems heavy rain warning

GUWAHATI: The number of districts and subdivisons affected in the first wave of floods rose to 18 on Monday evening from 14 the previous day
However, the number of flood-hit people in the state has come down by about 3,000 in the last 24 hours, said the Assam State Disaster
Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin
As on Monday evening, 15 districts - Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari,
Sonitpur, Cachar, Jorhat, Kamrup (Metro) and Udalguri are directly impacted by floods
The three subdivisons that have been hit are Biswanath, Hojai and Tamulpur
Cachar, Darrang, Jorhat, Kamrup (Metro), Kokrajhar and Nalbari are facing urban floods
The Kopili, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, was flowing above danger mark at Kampur in central Assam on Monday
The ASDMA said as on Monday evening, 30,729 people are affected by floods in the state of whom 13,599 are women and 2,866 children
Altogether, 25 relief camps are operational in the state and 17 of these are in the worst-hit Lakhimpur district of upper Assam
Further, the government has operationalized another 25 relief distribution centres across the affected districts.Over 84,700 livestock has
been affected by the current wave of floods, whereas 4741.23 hectares of crop area is facing inundation
With the monsoon remaining active over the northeastern region, the IMD 'orange warning' for the northeast is still active
An 'orange warning' is a call to disaster management agencies to stay prepared to tackle eventualities due to adverse climatic conditions
"Widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy rainfall/thunderstorms with lightning is very likely to continue
over Assam during the next 2-3 days and likely to decrease gradually thereafter," the IMD said in its Monday bulletin
Cherrapunji continued to experience the highest rainfall (28cm) in the region in the last 24 hours
Several other places in west Assam, Bongaigaon (23 cm), Gossaigaon (22 cm) and Kokrajhar (22 cm) experienced extremely heavy rainfall during
the period
The Met office here warned that thunderstorms and lightning are very likely to occur at isolated places over all seven NE states on Tuesday
