Mr Chawla is named in the charge sheet but CBI officials need government permission to prosecute him as per the amended provisions of the
Prevention of Corruption Act.
The amendments were passed by Parliament recently and the Delhi high court on Monday gave CBI two months time
to obtain sanction for prosecuting officials named in the charge sheet
The amendments say that prosecuting agencies like the CBI need government permission from a competing authority before prosecuting former
CBI filed its charge sheet against former Union minister P Chidambaram, his son Karti, 10 individuals, including public servants, and six
companies for alleged irregularities and criminal conspiracy in the Aircel-Maxis deal case
Mr Chawla is one of the individuals named but the nature of the charges is not yet known
Officials at the National Stock Exchange have told Sebi that they are not aware of what Mr Chawla has been accused of.
Normally, senior,
high ranking executives would face pressure to resign if they are named in a charge sheet of any sort.
Some retired bankers and public
approvals.
Recently, CBI had also named BSE Chairman S Ravi in an FIR in the Rs 600 crore fraud case at IDBI bank
Ravi continues as the chairman as the exchange has taken the stand that it is just an FIR and not a formal charge sheet.
