Recommendations have actually been submitted by a committee appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers to propose a framework for trainee
admissions to the Faculty of Medicine (FOM) of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU)
The committee is co-chaired by the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) and consists of
Secretary to the Ministry of Education Nalaka Kaluwewa and Secretary to the Ministry of Health Dr
Anil Jasinghe.The committee has provided 10 recommendations relating to the admission of students to the KDU Medical Faculty.Among these
are: Only one batch of medical students will be confessed annually.The overall variety of trainees admitted each year will be restricted to
An optimum of 100 regional civilian medical trainees will be confessed on a fee-paying basis.Priority for admissions will be given in the
following order: Students from the tri-forces (military), Foreign trainees, Local civilian students.Additionally, all trainees must satisfy
a minimum Z-score of 1.4000 or greater, as determined by the universitys management board.Of the overall local civilian student consumption,
10% will be admitted on complete scholarships
These trainees will be picked through the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher Education, and the Ministry of Vocational
Education.Students admitted to the KDU Medical Faculty: Will not be allowed to register as a full-time internal trainee at state
universities (excluding the Open University)
Trainees who are already signed up as full-time internal trainees at other state universities (omitting the Open University) will not be
allowed to enlist at KDU.Civilian trainees enrolled in the course will not be required to wear a special uniform
They will participate in lectures in the very same way as trainees in other medical faculties.The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of
Mass Media will identify and designate specific hospitals for medical training for these students.KDU will not ensure work for these
trainees in federal government medical facilities after graduation
Any such employment will depend exclusively on the schedule of jobs at the time
Trainees will be required to acknowledge this condition during enrollment.Furthermore, academic staff members currently serving in medical
professors under the University Grants Commission (UGC) will only be qualified for consultation to the KDU Medical Faculty after a five-year
cooling-off duration following their resignation from UGC-affiliated organizations
This condition will not use during sabbatical leave or retirement, according to the suggestions of the committee.
