China denounces Canada's tariffs on products containing Chinese steel

INSUBCONTINENT EXCLUSIVE:
In the name of protecting its own industries, Canada has announced unilateral measures such as imposing additional tariffs on products
containing Chinese steel, which has violated the WTO rules, disrupted the international trade order, and undermined China's interests, a
spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce said on Friday. On Wednesday, Canada announced that in response to U.S
steel tariffs and global steel overcapacity, it will tighten existing quotas, and impose additional tariffs on imports outside the quota,
starting from August 1
The country will implement additional tariffs of 25 percent on steel imports from all non-U.S
countries containing steel melted and poured in China. In response, the spokesperson said this is a typical act of unilateralism and
protectionism, adding that China is strongly dissatisfied and opposes such an act.The main reason for the difficulties faced by Canada's
domestic steel industry is the unilateral tariff measures of the United States, the spokesperson said
However, the Canadian government has avoided the contradiction and attempted to shift the damage to other trading partners including
China."Canada's actions are unreasonable, illegal and unhelpful, and will seriously jeopardize the normal economic and trade cooperation
between China and Canada," noted the spokesperson. The spokesperson expressed China's hope that Canada will immediately correct its
wrongdoings and stop its restrictive measures to maintain the multilateral trading system and the overall interests of China-Canada economic
and trade relations. The Chinese side will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese
enterprises, the spokesperson added.
