
(Representational Image)The Greater Chennai Corporation on Monday collected Rs 2.5 lakh as fine from those who were found to have been flouting Covid-19 guidelines.
Since lockdown, the GCC has collected close to Rs 2 crore in the form of fines imposed for flouting coronavirus guidelines.Earlier this month, an ordinance was passed stating that violation of Covid-19 lockdown norms will attract fines.
The Tamil Nadu government said SOPs aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19 have been put into place in the state and must be followed strictly.Over 15,000 volunteers have been employed by the GCC to monitor if people are violating rules.
During Monday's drive, Rs 2.5 lakh was collected in the city of Chennai.
People are being fined Rs 500 for not wearing masks and Rs 200 for spitting in public places.With relaxations in place, more and more people have started coming out of their homes and officials on duty have been forced to be stricter on people who fail to follow guidelines.As of September 14, a total of 5,08,511 cases of Covid-19 have been reported in Tamil Nadu.
