NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday quashed the present system of appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and election commissioners and ruled that a panel of PM, CJI and the leader of opposition will make these appointmentsA five-judge constitution bench in a consentaneous verdict agreed with the plea that the consultation of CEC and ECs be done on the line of consultation done for CBI director to make the commission more independent and to avoid any type of disturbance in its operating.
Purity of election process should be maintained to maintain democracy otherwise it would cause disastrous repercussions, the leading court stated.
