Seems Google still cannot differentiate between AI-generated photos and genuine ones.
According to a report in Business Insider, an AI-generated image of the late Hawaiian singerIsrael Kamakawiwoole is currently showing up as the top search result on Google when you search his name.
Kamakawiwoole's photo was discovered by Ethan Mollick, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. The professor spotted the change and shared a screenshot of it on X, formerly Twitter."Seriously, don't trust anything you see online anymore.
Faking stuff is trivial.
You cannot tell the difference," he wrote. The main image that appeared when Mollick searched did a Google search for the singer Kamakawiwoole is a Midjourney creation right from Reddit.
These AI-generated images of Kamakawiwoole are reported to have been first posted on Reddit in July.
TOI-Tech searched for "Israel Kamakawiwoole" photos and found the AI-generated images continuing to appear among the top search results. For those unaware, Kamakawiwoole was famous for his acoustic and rendition of Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow." He died in 1997 at the age of 38.Google to watermark AI-generated imagesEarlier this year, Google said that it is adding two new features to its image search to reduce the spread of misinformation.
Google said that it will mark every AI-generated image created by its tools as such and its working with other platforms and services to make sure they add the same markup to the files they put out.
Midjourney and Shutterstock are among the publishers Google has on board, and the goal is to ensure that all AI content that appears in search results is flagged as such.
