Medical Education Commission has decided to provide 75 per cent scholarship quota for MBBS and other bachelorlevel health studies from this academic year.
The scholarship is available for MBBS, BDS, nursing, Ayurvedic medicine, radiology among various other bachelor level health studies, said Shree Krishna Giri, vice-chair at Medical Education Commission.
The scholarships will be made available to students who are admitted in government medical colleges — Institute of Medicine, Patan Academy of Health Sciences and BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences this year.
As many as 350 students will be granted scholarships this year, according to Giri.
The commission has planned to provide scholarships in all thegovernment medical colleges across the country in future. &Scholarship will also be made available in Karnali Academy of Health Sciences and Rapti Academy of Health Sciences when MBBS programme starts there,& said Giri.
The students getting admissions in government medical colleges will be eligible tofor scholarships. The selection of students will be done on the basis of the merit list in medical entrance examinations, said Giri.
Earlier the scholarship was limited to 10 per cent.
&The commission has decided to increase the scholarship to provide access to medical studies for poor but talented students,& Giri added.
National Medical Education Act has explained that 75 per cent scholarship seats be allocated in state-funded medical colleges.
The act also explains that medical colleges run with domestic resources need to reserve 10 per cent scholarship quota for students.
