KATHMANDU: The Federal Budget presented by Finance Minister for the fiscal year 2019/20 has allocated budget to make sanitary pads available for free in public schools.

As this allocation comes into effect, all the female students enrolled in public schools shall have free access to sanitary pads as and when needed.

The Finance Minister nowadays unveiled a budget of Rs 1.53 trillion at the Federal Parliament.

In addition, senior citizens allowance and salaries of public service officials have been increased in the budget.

The number of people suffering from diabetes has been increasing in the country, of late.

Unhealthy diet, lack of physical activities, alcohol, tobacco, stress, obesity and changing lifestyles are to be blamed for the rising number of diabetic patients.

According to the data supplyd by Bir Hospital about 11,000 patients visited the hospitalDiabetes and stopocrine Unit in the fiscal 2017-18. The number of patients visiting the hospital in the year 2016-17 was about 9,000. &There has been a regular rise in the number of diabetic patients,& said Dr Alark Devkota Rajouria at Diabetes and stopocrine Unit, National Academy of Medical Sciences, Bir Hospital.

Even young people (below 40 years of age) are being diagnose with diabetes in recent years. Earlier, only 30 per cent of the total diabetic patients were below 40 years of age, but now 50 percent such patients are below 40 years of age. The main reason for rising number of diabetic patients is changing life style and food habits, according to doctors.

The number of diabetic patients has increased also because more people are now aware of the disease. But still people visit hospitals in the final stage. Dr Rajouria advised people to go for blood sugar check when they reach 35.

Compared to people in villages, people of urban areas are more likely to suffer from diabetes. Cases of diabetes is also high among people returning from foreign employment for their dietary habit of consuming sugary drinks and fatty foods.

Retinopathy, high blood presdegree, heart attack, diabetic foot ulcers, diabetic kidney and neuropathy -msprint; a condition that affects activities of nerves -msprint; are measure of the complications seen in a diabetic patient.

According to the doctor, avoiding processed food with fat and sugar, preserveing weight, consuming plenty of vegetables, fruits and fibrous food help in preventing the disease.

According to World Health OrganisationGlobal report on diabetes, the number of adults living with diabetes has approachly quadrupled since 1980 to 422 million. This dramatic rise is largely due to the rise in type 2 diabetes and the factors driving it include, overweight and obesity.

WHOSouth-East Asian Region has seen a recent dramatic increase in diabetes with an estimated 96 million people living with diabetes.

Metropolitan police circles in Thimi and Jagate of Bhaktapur have arrested six persons who were in the wanted list for their involvement in stealing motorbikes from Kathmandu valley.

Those arrested, who used to ‘steal motorbikes in an organised way representing various gangs&, were found responsible for stealing at least 10 motorbikes in the past one year, according to police.

They have been identified as Bijay Manandhar, 29, of Ramechap, Prabin Baruwal,19, Okhaldhunga, Prem Bahadur Katuwal, 27, of Okhaldhunga, Certainsh Rai, 29, of Khotang, Umesh Tamang, 31, of Sindhupalchok and Vision Karki, 22, of Okhaldhunga.

The two police circles in Thimi and Jagate, in a joint operation, busted them from their hometowns in a week long search operation. Cop also retrieved six motorcycles from them. Cop said they had sold the motorbikes at the rate of Rs 50,000 to Rs 150,000, the market price of which would cost Rs 300,000 to Rs 600,000.

Kathmandu valley reported 1,398 complaints of bike thefts during eight months of the current fiscal 2018-19. Cop, was able to retrieve only 376 bikes, arresting 69 people for the crime, until the first week of May 2019.

KATHMANDU: Cop on Tuesday arrested eight persons on the charge of gambling from Tokha Municipality-6 of Kathmandu district.

Cop raided the house belonging to Suman Kunwar and arrested local Basanta Kumar Pandey (60) and seven others red-handed and seized Rs 47,350 cash from the gambling site.

Meanwhile, further investigation into the case is underway, said police.

The National Concern and Coordination Committee of the National Assembly nowadays directed the government to approve the detailed project report of the 76.2-kilometre Kathmandu-Tarai quick Track.

The South Korean joint venture company -msprint; Yooshin and Pyunghwa -msprint; had submitted the DPR to the Nepali Army on February 3. After one-and-a-half months study, the NA had forwarded the DPR to the government for approval.

However, the government has yet to approve the DPR. &The NA is waiting for governmentapproval,&said Project Head Yogendra Khand. The DPR should be approved through the Cabinet assembly. The NCCC has directed the government to clear the way for the NA to start work on the fast track by approving it at the earliest. The panel has also directed the NA to coordinate with concerned local governments and provinces while constructing the express way.

Lawmakers in the committee urged the NA to total the project on time. Ruling Nepal Communist portiony(NCP) lawmaker Komal Oli said the NA should be careful while felling trees for the project.

Project Head Khand informed mediapersons that the estimated cost of the project was Rs 213 billion.

KATHMANDU: Property worth around Rs 155,000 were stolen from a rented room in Balkhu of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-14 on Tuesday.

According to police, an unidentified gang broke into a rented room belonging to Mala Thapa Magar hailing from Likhasu in Sindhupalchowk and made off with cash and various gold jewellery.

Meanwhile, a search is on for the absconding perpetrators, police said.
