EC steps up counter-terrorism, extremism prevention support to SL

The European Commission, through its Instrument contributing to Stability and Peace, has allocated 8.5 million euros to support Sri Lankan efforts to prevent violent extremism, build community resilience, and promote peace and tolerance.In a statement, the European Commission today said the amount would also contribute to the ongoing peace-building process through internally displaced persons and refugees being able to return to their land.&This allocation comes after High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherinimeeting earlier this month with the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, where she underlined the EUreadiness to support Sri Lanka in the face of the challenges of terrorism and violent extremism,& it said.

COPE set to probe four State bodies

High ranking officials of four giant state sector infrastructure and service institutions will be summoned before the ParliamentCommittee on Public Enterprises (COPE) over four successive days next week.SriLankan Airlines officials have been summoned before the COPE on August 20, Sathosa officials have been summoned on August 21, the Water Supply and Drainage Board on August 22 and the Ceylon Electricity Board on the 23rd.

Amarapura and Ramanna Nikayas to be merged

Adding a new chapter to the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, an agreement to merge together the Sri Lanka Amarapura and Ramanna Nikayas would be signed on Friday at 02.30 pm at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo. With the signing of the agreement the two Nikayas would function as Sri Lanka Amarapura Ramanna Sama Gri Maha Sangha Sabhawa.

Second ICC World Test Championship under threat of rain

GALLE, Tuesday & The second series of the newly formed ICC World Test Championship beginning at the Galle International Stadium between Sri Lanka and New Zealand today looks like being confined to a watery beginning with the prospect of the match being affected largely by bad weather.Neither team had any chance of even making their way to the ground as it rained throughout the day yesterday. The entire ground was under covers and it didn&t present an encouraging sight.
