Showery and windy conditions to continue today

South-west monsoon conditions are gradually establishing over the island. Therefore, showery and windy conditions (particularly in the South-western part)are expected to continue today. Showers will occur at times in Western, Southern, Central, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Mannar district. Several spells of showers will occur in Anuradhapura district. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere particularly after 2.00pm. Heavy falls between 100-150 mm can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central, Western and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts. Fairly heavy falls about 75 mm can be expected at some places in Eastern and Uva Provinces. Fairly strong gusty winds up to 40-50 kmph are also likely over the country, particularly in the central hilly areas and over western and southern coastal areas. There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

Nine Muslim ministers have announced their resignation

Nine Muslim ministers have announced their resignation from their ministerial portfolios to sit as backbenchers in Parliament for a period of one month during which they have requested the government to investigate allegations against the ministers and the Muslim community expeditiously. Relief package for business sectors to be announced in Parliament - Minister

A relief package provided to all business sectors facing economic difficulties following the Easter Sunday terrorist bomb attacks will be announced in Parliament on Thursday, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera said. The Minister who said the Tourism sector faced the brunt of the adverse economic impact of the Easter Sunday attacks added that a relief loan scheme for small scale interventourists in the Tourism sector would be launched through all banks on June 10.

Rs.500 Mn fund for terror attacks disabled or orphaned children

The government has taken measures to establish a special fund for children left disabled or orphaned due to the Easter Sunday bombings. Issuing a statement, the Prime MinisterOffice noted that the fund would be established with Rs.500 million, while the government will grant Rs. 100 million and the balance Rs.400 million would be added as donations.
