Write comment (91 Comments)TV series. ... Andrew Cunningham and Lee Hutchinson have invested decades of their lives with Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson's Wheel of Time books, and they formerly brought that understanding to bear as they wrapped up each very first season episode and 2nd season episode of Amazon's WoT TV series. Now we're back in the saddle for season 3along with insights, jokes, and the occasional wild theory. These recaps won't cover every aspect of every episode, but they will contain major spoilers for the program and the book series. We'll do our finest to not ruin major future occasions from the books, however there's constantly the risk that something may slip out. If you wish to stay completely pristine and have not check out the books, these recaps aren't for you.New episodes of The Wheel of Time season three will be posted for Amazon Prime subscribers every Thursday. This article covers the season 3 finale, He Who Comes With the Dawn, which was launched on April 17. Lee: Wow. That was a lot.One of the recurring themes of our recaps throughout seasons has been, Well, I think were going to need to give up on seeing $SEMI_MAJOR_BOOK_SETTING_OR_EVENT on screen since of spending plan or time or narrative factors, and weve needed to let go of a lot of things. This episode kicks off with a flashback showing Elaida strolling out of a particular twisted redstone doorframe, looking smug and fingering a bracelet. Observant audiences may have spotted this entrance in the background of the season best, when the Black Ajah loots the Towers terangreal stockroom, and now in real Chekovs Gun fashion, the entrance comes 'round againand not simply this one, because like many things in the Wheel of Time, the entrances come in a binary set.We certainly owe show-watchers an extremely quick recap of the Finnand I think we glossed over a scene in an earlier episode where the kids are in fact playing the snakes-and-foxes video game that these scary fae-folk are based onbut before we do that, lets breathe and take a look at what else weve got in the episode. Closure! (Well, some.) Balefire! Blocks breaking! Rand pulling a Paul Atreides and making it rain on Dune! I imply, uh, in the Three-Fold Land! And numerous other things! According to the book, this Cat-in-the-Hat-looking mfer's clothes are made from human flesh. Weird. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios According to the book, this Cat-in-the-Hat-looking mfer's clothing are made of human flesh. Scary. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Andrew: I found this episode less than satisfying after recently's specifically due to the fact that of that grab-bag technique. There is some amazing, significant, season finale-style things taking place here, but it's also one of those piece-moving episodes with scene after scene of setup, setup, setup without a ton of room for payoff. Setup for a 4th season that, as of this writing, we still don't understand whether we're getting! So a variety of things simply feel rushed, the majority of substantially Rand's difficult turn on Lanfear after a cursory attempt to coax her back to the side of the Light, and the presence of balefire as a concept. I actually like how the program visualizes itit's basically a giant death laser that melts you out of the Pattern so thoroughly that it does not simply kill you, it also removes the last couple of seconds of your presence, represented here as a little shadow of a person that rewinds a bit before dissipating. The books use balefire extensively as a get-out-of-jail-free card for particular major character deaths, so it actually feels like something that requires a little more preamble than it gets here.Lee: Definitely hear you on the Rand and Lanfear stuffthough I think I was so delighted by the things I cared about that I wasnt actually paying a lot of attention to the important things I didnt. And Rand - & Moiraine & Lanfear are sort of at the bottom of my list of things Im taking notice of as we move into the finishyeah, the Car'a'carn is Car'a'carning and Lanfear is Lanfear'ing. Balefire looks a little Ghostbusters-y, but I absolutely wouldn't want to get hit with any. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Balefire looks a little Ghostbusters-y, but I certainly wouldn't want to get hit with any. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Andrew: It's difficult to know where to start with the rest of it! There are some entertainments of book events that take place roughly where they're supposed to in the story. There are leisures of book occasions that have been pulled method forward to save a long time. There are things that absolutely don't happen in the books, also done a minimum of partly in the interests of time. And there's at least something that felt created specifically to fake out book-readers. What to go into first?Lee: The fake-out! Lets dive in there. The books make a big deal about Rand needing an instructor for him to get proficient at channeling, and it cant be a female Aes Sedai (as the oft-repeated bit about a bird can not teach a fish to swim makes clear). It seemed like it might be poor neglected Logain (remember him?), now the show makes it clear that the male on the spot is rather going to be Sammaeland then Moghedien comes along and puts all of Sammaels withins on the outside. Soooooo I guess Sammael is off the board. Sammael (center) seems about as dead as Siuan. So much for that plotline. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Sammael (center) seems about as dead as Siuan. Much for that plotline. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Andrew: Yup! We still have one Forsaken missing out on, by my countthere are 8 in total in the show's world, and we've seen 5 and had 2 more referenced by name. So the huge open concern is whether the 8th is the Forsaken who does wind up in the Rand-teacher role in the books. I seem like the show wouldn't have actually invested a lot time establishing Rand needs an instructor without then bothering to act on it in some way, but this episode wants to tease people who are asking that question instead of answering it. Fair enough!Sammael's early death (pulled forward from book 7) has its own story reverberations. In the books he's one of a couple of Forsaken who set themselves up as heads of state, and Rand needs to run around separately beating them and bringing all of these different kingdoms together in time for the Last Battle (this is less exciting than it sounds, due to the fact that it takes forever and requires limitless perseverance for browsing the politics of each region). It appears, progressively, that we may just be avoiding over a lot of that things. That was already suggested by the downplaying of Cairhienin politicking that we got on screen in season two, and I tend to see putting all of Sammael's blood on the outdoors as another possible nod because direction. As ever with this show, knowing how it goes in the books only offers us a limited amount of insight into what the program is going to do.Lee: Im liking it. I think about Rands world-unifying to be among the core elements of The Slog that we discussed recently, and I believe anything that greases the skids on that whole plotline is unquestionably a great thingthats likewise about where I start avoiding entire chapters if the word Elayne appears in them (believe me on this, show-watchers who may become book-readers: Elayne invests countless pages playing the most uninteresting variation of the Game of Thrones possible, and we suffer through every interminable import/export discussion with her). Mentioning Game of Thronesat least in the sense of killing off characters and possibly shortening The SlogSiuans dead! And probably not in a can be fixed type of method, considering that we extremely clearly see her head separated from her body, and Moiraine gasps out verification. This one sort of shook me, considering that Siuan has a big significant function to play in a particular big significant thing that happens numerous books hencebut the more I think of it, the more this feels like the same sort of narrative belt-tightening that brought us Loials death last episode. Because up till that specific huge significant thing happens, Siuan spends a great deal of her post-Amyrlin time as a scullery house maid and underpants-washer. I think we can transplant that certain huge major thing onto among a half-dozen other characters and lose absolutely nothing. At leastI believe. What about you? Siuan (center) has actually handed down. She disappears. She has ceased to be. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Siuan (center) has actually handed down. She is no more. She has ceased to be. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Andrew: Yeah, I indicate, not nothing, precisely. Every book character we have actually lost on the show has done things that I liked in the books that is now probably not going to happen. Complaining about The Slog aside, individuals like these books in part due to the fact that they effectively develop a super-dense world occupied by a million called characters who all have Moments. Post-Amyrlin Siuan's journey is about humility, discovering joy, and showing that the actual One Power is not the only type of power there is to wield; it's not constantly exhilarating, however I won't say it's of absolutely no narrative value. And even when discussing The Slog, part of the reason it was so shocking is because you and I read these as they were coming out. If you wait three years for a book, and then it comes out and absolutely nothing happens: that's frustrating! It is also not an issue that exists for contemporary readers or re-readers, now that the books have actually been done and dusted for over a years. My assessment of Knife of Dreams, the series' 11th book and the last one written totally by Jordan, went way up on my last re-read since I was able to experience it without also needing to experience the bookless years before and after. (It likewise made me newly unfortunate that Jordan wasn't able to conclude the story himself, as somebody who finds the Sanderson-assisted books a bit cumbersome and practical.)All of that being stated! I agree that from this point forward in the story, Siuan is not a load-bearing character in the way that Rand or Egwene or the others are. You do likewise get the sense that the show wants to shock book-readers with something huge every now and then. This particular death attains that and likewise cuts down on what the program has delegated adjust. I get why they did it! I also sympathize with people who will miss her. Now that she's Amyrlin, Elaida (center) gets to use the greatest hat of all. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Now that she's Amyrlin, Elaida (center) gets to wear the biggest hat of all. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Lee: Lets pivot, since I cant wait to discuss Mats journey into Finn-landone of the most important things that takes place to his character in the books. I was pretty persuaded that we just werent going to get any of this in the showthat the Aelfinn and Eelfinn would be too outside what Amazon is willing to pay for. And yet, there are our 2 twisted redstone entrances. Theyre repositioned somewhat from their book locations, however in a credible style. We have no concept what Elaida may have been doing in the entrance in the bowels of the White Towerpresumably she checked out the snake-like Aelfinn (and the subtitles validate this), which leaves Mat checking out the fox-like Eelfin. The show has actually been dropping tips about this all season, from flashing us a shot of the first entrance in episode one, to in fact revealing the snakes and foxes tabletop game being played, and lastly, here we arewhile searching for the control necklace in the Panarchs palace in Tanchico, Mat steps through the entrance and ... gets three dreams from a horrifying BDSM furry?Break it down for us, Andrew. What the hell are we looking at?Andrew: When you get in through these doors, the Finn offer you stuff! The Aelfinn provide you knowledge, by answering 3 questions. And the Eelfinn provide you Things, both tangible and intangible, by approving 3 desires. Exactly what these individuals are, where they live, why they have this arrangement with anyone who goes into through the doorways: even in a series consumed with overexplaining things, these are do not worry about it, that's just how it is questions. What you require to know is that the Aelfinns' responses are often cryptic and open to interpretation, and the Eelfinns' wish-granting is hyper-literal and includes, uh, strings connected, as Mat quickly discovers.Mat getting his things from the Eelfinn is basically the minute he becomes the Mat he is for the rest of the story, like Perrin's wolf powers or Egwene's dream-walking or Rand's channeling. So it's critical! What did you consider how the program managed it? Set Sjstrand as Rand's Shaido competitor Couladin (center), producing genuine Great Value Brand Khal Drogo energy here. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Set Sjstrand as Rand's Shaido competitor Couladin (center), releasing genuine Great Value Brand Khal Drogo energy here. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Lee: I thought it was quite great! We get to see Mats foxhead medalliongranted in reaction to his shouting about how sick he is of being bollocked about by every bloody magic force on this bloody world. More importantlypossibly the most important thing of all to a certain class of book reader!is that we likewise lastly get to see the weapon that will define Mat both in combat and out for the whole rest of the series. Thats right, kids, its an actual-for-real Ashandareiand Mats hanging from it, similar to in the books! Well, sort of. Sort of rather similarly to the books!Mat is being lined up and geared up extremely well now to head towards his destiny. After this much of an accumulation, the most Wheel of Time-esque thing to occur now would be for him to be totally absent from season 4. Ell-oh-ell. A bargain made, a price is paid. It's a little tough to make out, however you can clearly see Mat's (center) Ashandarei stabbed into the top of the doorframejust follow the rope. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios A deal made, a rate is paid. It's a little difficult to make out, but you can clearly see Mat's (center) Ashandarei stabbed into the top of the doorframejust follow the rope. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Andrew: The Tanchico plotline is likewise sort of finished up here in abrupt style. In essence, our heroes fail. Not just do Moghedien and Liandrin handle to escape with all the parts of the collar they need to confine and manage the Dragon Reborn, however they likewise agree to collaborate so they can beat the other Big Bads and become the greatest bads of all. I can not see this ending well for either of them, but Kate Fleetwood's Liandrin is such an unhinged presence on this program that I'm glad she's sticking around. Our heroes do not leave entirely empty-handed, I suppose. Thom informs Elayne that they actually know each other and informs her that Lord Gaebril is actually a Forsaken and a usurper whom she hasn't actually known her entire life. And Nynaeve gets pitched into the sea, where a near-death experience liquifies the block that is keeping her from channeling easily (the show does not say this overtly, however this is only gently changed from a comparable series that happens in book 7 or eight, I think). Nynaeve (center) doing her best Charlton Heston impression. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Nynaeve (center) doing her best Charlton Heston impression. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Lee: Right, I think Nynaeves obstruct gets busted in book sevenI keep in mind because when I began reading the series, that was the latest available book and the occasion stuck out. I very much like bringing it forward, too. In the books, keeping the block around makes good sense narratively and serves a strong set of purposes; in the show, it was beginning to feel less like a legitimate plot device and more like a bad storytelling crutch. It has served its function, and it's time to eliminate it and proceed with things.(Though it is sort of funny to note that Liandrin was the one trying to assist Nynaeve break the block in the program a number of seasons ago. Looks like Liandrin finally discovered a technique that works! The outcomes, however, will not be what she anticipates.) The foxhead medallionone of the three products that pertain to specify Matrim Cauthon (center). Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios The foxhead medallionone of the three items that come to specify Matrim Cauthon (center). Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Andrew: The show has set all of us approximately converge in Tear in season 4, essentially reversing in the story and doing parts of book 3; my guess would be that, if it's still identifiable as an adjustment of any specific Wheel of Time book, we see parts of books five and perhaps 6 mixed therein, too. All of that is contingent on the program getting another season, and for the first time going into a WoT finale, we aren't really sure if that's occurring, right?Lee: Ugh, yeah, still no word on the next season, which sucks, because this one was so damn great. We cover in the desert, where Rand has darkened the skies (enough to be seen all over the world!) and brought rain. Everybody looks on portentously. The Stone of Tear and the sword within it (Callandor! Its the sword in the stone!) beckon. We just need the all-swallowing beast that is Amazon to spare some pocket change to make it happen. Rand (center-right) summons the rains. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Rand (center-right) summons the rains. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Andrew: I've been fretted about this renewal. Dramas like this simply do not get as numerous seasons as they would have in ages of TV gone by, and we're several years past the end of streaming TV's blank check period (unless you're Apple television+, I guess). This season has actually made a great deal of praise from more individuals than usit's got a greater Rotten Tomatoes rating than either of the previous seasons, and greater than the 2nd season of Rings of Power. But it likewise does not look like Wheel of Time has actually ended up being the breakout crossover smash-hit success that Jeff Bezos wanted when he demanded his own Game of Thrones all those years ago. It's expensive, and shows get more expensive the longer they run, as the people in front of and behind the cam work out raises and contract renewals.I would love to see this get a fourth season. The third season had enough terrific things in it that I would be legally sad to see it canceled now, which is more connected than I was to the show at the end of its first or second seasons. How 'bout you? And how can this be? For he is the Kwisatz Haderach! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, say goodbye to Dune jokes. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios And how can this be? For he is the Kwisatz Haderach! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, say goodbye to Dune jokes. Credit: Prime/Amazon MGM Studios Lee: I've said it a lot, and I'll state it once again: This has actually been the season where the program found itself. I have every confidence that the next couple of seasonsif they're enabled to existare going to kick ass.But this is 2025, the year all dreams die. Perhaps this program, too, is a dreamone from which we are fated to wake sooner, rather than later.I expect we'll understand quickly. Till then, dear readers, might you always find water and shade, and might the hand of the Creator shelter you all. And likewise perhaps knock some sense into Bezos.
