NEW DELHI: The domestic indices wiped off New year day's gains and opened in red owing to a fall in rupee and data showing lower GST collection for month of December.
Stocks back home also picked up cues from Asian peers which witnessed a downturn owing to disappointing economic data from China.Around 9:30 am, BSE Sensex was trading at 36,054, down 201 points or 0.55 per cent while its NSE counterpart Nifty fell by 65 points, or 0.59 per cent, to 10,845.In 30-share pack, four stocks gained while 26 lost.
SBI was biggest index gainer.
The scrip climbed 0.79 per cent.
Other stocks trading in green were TCS, YES Bank and Infosys.On other hand Tata Steel declined most, falling 2.08 per cent.
Other losers included MM, Tata Motors, Vedanta, Hero MotoCorp and ONGC.Among Nifty stocks, 10 advanced while 40 declined.Chambal Fertilisers Chemicals was biggest gainer on BSE by rising 4.97 per cent.
Eicher Motors was biggest loser.
It lost 4.92 per cent after Royal Enfield on Tuesday reported a 13 per cent decline in total sales to 58,278 units in December.
On BSE Sensex Chambal Fertilisers Chemicals was biggest gainer, rising 4.97 per cent.

On BSE sectoral front barring IT, consumer durables, realty and teck all other sectors were trading lower.
Major losers included metals, auto, oil gas, utilities and power.Midcap index witnessed a tepid session.
BSE Midcap fell by 0.12 per cent, while Smallcap lost 0.01 per cent.The advance decline ratio on BSE stood 1:1.
