TEHRAN Iran's ambassador to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ali Bahraini, has actually sharply criticized the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for embracing a politically driven and prejudiced resolution versus Iran.Speaking throughout the Councils 58th regular session on Thursday, Bahraini condemned the approval of the resolution recognized as A/HRC/58/ L.
20/Rev.1 which passed with 24 votes in favor, eight against, and 15 abstentions. The adoption of such a resolution is a clear abuse of this platform, one that not only weakens the Councils effectiveness but likewise diverts its important resources from real crises, Bahraini told delegates. The Iranian envoy accused the Western states that sponsored the resolution, especially the United Kingdom and Germany, of double standards and political adjustment.
He asserted that these nations must be held responsible for their oppression of the Iranian people and their wider function in perpetuating global injustice.Bahraini went on to denounce the resolutions extension of the mandates for both the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran and the ongoing Fact-Finding Mission.
These requireds are charged with examining what the UN refers to as severe and ongoing human rights violations within the country. There is a glaring lack of proportionality in between the claims made in the resolution and the actual human rights situation in Iran, he stated, identifying the document as deceptive and part of a wider project to discredit Iran.Rather than focusing on Iran, Bahraini prompted the Council to redirect its attention to the dire and devastating human rights conditions in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian areas.
At a time when the gravest infractions of human rights are being devoted versus Palestinians with the wrongdoers enjoying complete resistance the UNHRC is being misguided into inspecting Iran under incorrect pretenses, he argued.Concluding his remarks, Bahraini called on member states to resist a politically inspired relocation aimed at distorting the Councils objective.
He stressed the importance of protecting the UNHRCs integrity by turning down resolutions that serve geopolitical interests instead of the real promo of human rights.
