
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated on Wednesday that the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, reaffirmed the group's commitment to multilateralism, the multilateral trading system and opposition to unilateral bullying.Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the meeting, which was held from April 28 to 29.This year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
At a news briefing, Guo Jiakun, the spokesperson, emphasized that all participating parties reaffirmed their strong support for the central role of the UN in the international system and condemned any attempts to unilaterally undermine the work of global multilateral institutions.Guo also noted that the BRICS countries expressed deep concerns about the growing trend of unilateral protectionist measures, including indiscriminate imposition of reciprocal tariffs and non-tariff barriers.
They warned that such measures disrupt the global supply chain and bring more uncertainty to the global economy, urging all sides to take measures to defend free trade and the multilateral trading system, added Guo.He further stated that the Global South, represented by BRICS, has gradually become a force for progress and justice that advances greater democracy in international relations.
A Global South that features solidarity and cooperation and seeks strength through unity will surely bring more stability and certainty to the world, Guo stressed.
