KATHMANDU: An electric short circuit sparked fire at the Victory Lounge in Durbarmarg, Kathmandu, this evening, police said.

Speaking to THT Online over the phone, a police officer at the Durbarmarg-based Metropolitan Police Circle, said, no human casualties were reported in the incident.

Meanwhile, efforts are being made to contain the fire on the 7th floor of the building, police said.

KATHMANDU: Multiple agreements and Memorandum of Associations (MoUs) were signed in the high-level delegation talks between Nepali and Chinese ministries held today at Solatee Crowne Plaza.

Prime Minister Oli led the delegations comprising of senior officials of various Ministries while Chinese President Xi led the counterparts delegation including Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Chinese Ambassador for Nepal, Hou Yanqi.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the list of instruments signed and exchanged between the two countries are:

  1. Agreement between the Governments of Nepal and the PeopleRepublic of China on the Boundary Management System.
  2. MoU between the Governments of Nepal and the PeopleRepublic of China on the Exchanges and Cooperation on Governance Capacity Building.
  3. Treaty between Nepal and the PeopleRepublic of China on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters.
  4. MoU on Mount Sagarmatha/Zhumulangma Protection Cooperation between Nepal and China.
  5. MoU on Promoting Key Projects of Investment and Cooperation on Productive Capacity between the National Planning Commission of Nepal and the National Development and Reform Commission of the PeopleRepublic of China.
  6. Exchange of Note for Setting up a Consulate General of Nepal in Chengdu.
  7. MoU between the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport of Nepal and the Ministry of Transport of the PeopleRepublic of China on Feasibility Study of China-Nepal Cross-Border Railway Project.
  8. Agreement between Kathmandu Metropolitan City of Nepal and Nanjing City of the PeopleRepublic of China on the Establishment of Sister-City Relationship.
  9. Agreement between Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City of Nepal and Xi&an City of the PeopleRepublic of China on the Establishment of Sister-City Relationship.
  10. MoU on Cooperation in Traditional Medicine between the Ministry of Health and Population of the Government of Nepal and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the PeopleRepublic of China.
  11. MoU between the Ministry of Home Affairs of Nepal and the Ministry of Emergency Management of the PeopleRepublic of China Regarding Cooperation in Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Response.
  12. MoU on Cooperation between the Supreme PeopleProcurator of the PeopleRepublic of China and Office of the Attorney General of Nepal.
  13. Agreement between Tribhuvan University of Nepal and Confucius Institute Headquarters of China on the Establishment of Confucius Institute at Tribhuvan University.
  14. The protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of Citrus Fruits from Nepal to China between the Department of Agriculture of the Government of Nepal and General Administration of Customs of the PeopleRepublic of China.
  15. MoU between the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies of the Government of Nepal and the Ministry of Commerce of the PeopleRepublic of China on the Establishment of Joint Working Group on Trade.
  16. Delivery and Acceptance Certificate for the China-Aid Earthquake Monitoring Network Project in Nepal.
  17. MoU on Establishment of Investment Cooperation Working Group between the Ministry of Finance of Nepal and the Ministry of Commerce of the PeopleRepublic of China.
  18. MoU between the Ministry of Finance of Nepal and China International Development Cooperation Agency on Tunnels Construction Cooperation.
  19. Exchange of Letter for Border Security Equipment and Office Equipment.
  20. Minutes of Meeting for Feasibility Investigation of China-Aid Municipal Water Supply Improvement Project in Kathmandu Valley of Nepal.

KATHMANDU: President of PeopleRepublic of China, Xi Jinping, wraps up his two-day state visit to Nepal, a first in 23 years for a Chinese President, with an aim to boost bilateral ties.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, along with his delegation, left for China today by an Air China aircraft, concluding his 20 hour visit, which has strengthen Sino-Nepal relations.

President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Vice President Nanda Kishor Pun, along with various ministries were present at the airport to bid farewell to Xi Jinping.

High level delegation talks were held with multiple leaders during his two day state visit where leaders of both the nations signed various Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) including trans-himalayan railway, infrastructure projects, technical university among others.

President Bhandari hosted a state banquet in honour of her Chinese counterpart including many high ranking officials at Megha Malhar Hall at Soaltee Crowne yesterday.

The final meeting which was held today with PM Oli focused on all aspects of Nepal-China relations, marking the end of President Xiprogramme in the capital.

The Chinese President also met with the president of the main opposition party Nepali Congress, Sher Bahadur Deuba where he discussed ways to strengthen the ages-old bilateral ties between Nepal and China.

Furthermore, a one-to-one meeting with the co-chair of ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP), Pushpa Kamal Dahal was held in the morning.

In his two-day visit, Kathmandu turned into a fortress for 2 days bringing traffic in the capital to a halt for dignitaries.

Various places in the capital including, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Tinkune, Baneshwar, Babarmahal, Naxal, Tripureshwar, Bhadrakali, Kesharmahal, Durbarmarga, Sundhara, Nagpokhari, Hattisar, Kalimati, Solteemode was decorated to welcome Chinese dignitaries. Streets were transformed by planting flowers and streetpoles were adorned with portraits of Bhandari and Jinping.

It is expected that Xi Jinpingvisit will further help promote Nepalmega campaign of Visit Nepal Year 2020.

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested 22 free-Tibet movement campaigners and human rights activists from Kathmandu over the past three days. They were planning to hold protests during Chinese President Xi Jinpingvisit to Nepal.

According to Metropolitan Police Range, Teku, five persons were arrested from Swoyambhu, nine from Bouddha, six from Pharping and two from an undisclosed location in Kathmandu. Police said those arrested from Bouddha were wearing track suits with ‘Free Tibet& slogan. Others were carrying Tibetan flags and bags with ‘Free Tibet& slogans.

Eleven of those arrested were Tibetan refugees while others were Nepalis, according to police.

Tenzing Lama, a Nepali citizen and a human rights activist, was arrested by police on October 10 from his residence in Thamel. Lama is receiving treatment at Manmohan Hospital under police custody since Friday.

Another human rights activist, BP Poudel, was arrested from Kathmandu on Saturday, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Hobindra Bogati.

However, some of those arrested from Bouddha were released on Saturday afternoon, according to a police source. Indra Prasad Aryal, chairman of Human Rights Organisation-Nepal, told THT that three police personnel had been deployed at his Balaju residence for the last three days. &They constantly keep an eye on me and follow all my movements. As a result I could not raise the human rights issues of Tibetan people,& he said. Police have stepped up security around monasteries in Kathmandu to prevent protests against the Chinesepresidentvisit or raising Tibetan issues, as Nepal is committed to one-China policy.

Visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli have been leading the delegations from China and Nepal respectively in the meeting which is to be focused on all aspects of Nepal-China relations.
