The government is set to hold a global conference here in the capital from November 4 to 7, inviting as many as1,000 delegates of 80 countries in a bidto meet the nutrition standards.

The government will co-host the event with the support of global movement called Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN), of which Nepal is a member country. There are 61 SUN member countries in the world and they have been working collaboratively since 2010 to end all forms of malnutrition.

The global gathering will be joined by the heads of state and the government, including the leaders from UN agencies, regional organisations, civil society, donors, and the private sector. National Planning Commission, issuing a press release, stated that Nepal had achieved remarkable progress in reducing malnutrition ever since the country joined the SUN Movement in 2011.

The event will showcase the efforts being made to eliminate all forms of malnutrition, including under-nutrition and obesity, and formulate new plans and programmes to combat the problems in future.

&Good nutrition is the key to reducing inequality and eliminating poverty for everyone,& reads the press release. It further states that nearly half of all child deaths occur due to malnutrition while poor diet is a leading risk factor for child death worldwide.

NepalNational Plan is in line with the set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the UN, in particular with SDG 1, eradicating poverty and SDG 2 ending hunger and malnutrition.

The NPC claimed that the global conference would help in attaining these goalsas well. National Action Plan 2016-2025 has made a plan to meet the zero hunger initiative.

Police in multiple raids last night arrested at least 38 persons from various places of Kathmandu for playing kauda (a traditional form of gambling with 16 sea shells) and playing cards.

As many as 21 persons were arrested from a private house at Aarubari 9 of Gokarneshwor Municipality yesterday morning.

Police confiscated Rs 1.892 million from the site along with nine sets of playing cards.

Raj Kumar Gurung, 42, of Pokhara was found to be operating illegal gambling in the house of Ramesh Tamang.

Police arrested all of them, who, according to police, had gambled throughout the night.

Similarly, police arrested 11 persons last night from the house of Uttam Kuikel at Banasthali-4 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

Acting on a tip-off, police had raided the house. Police also confiscated Rs 415,000 in cash, including 18 sets of kauda from the site.

In yet another incident, police arrested six persons from the house of Krishan Bahadur Chhetri for operating a gambling den.

Police confiscated Rs 16,000 in cash.

There is a practice of playing kauda as a form ofmerrymaking on the last day of Dashain called Kojagrat Purnima, which ended yesterday.

Krishna Bahadur Mahara, former speaker of the House of Representatives who was taken into police custody for investigation into attempt-to-rape charge levelled against him, will be presented at Kathmandu District Court tomorrow.

As the court is currentlyclosed for an extended period, Maharaarraignment has been postponed.

&We will be taking him to the court immediately after it reopens. A medical superintendent will be accompanying Mahara,& said a police source on condition of anonymity.

Further procedures for investigation will be set in motion when the court opens, added the police source.

Mahara, who was held in custody at Metropolitan Police Circle, Singha Durbar, is currently admitted to Thapathali-based Norvic Hospital after he complained of chest pain since Thursday afternoon. Mahara has been under medication for respiratory ailments and blood pressure since long.

The hospital however is unsure when Mahara will be discharged. &His blood pressure is fluctuating and doctors are treating him. We can&t tell anything about his discharge date now,& said Rajendra Bahadur Singh, executive director at Norvic Hospital.

&As per todayreport Maharablood pressure has fallen sharply. He needs to be continuously monitored,& said a hospital source.

Roshani Shahi, a nurse at the Parliament Secretariat had lodged First Information Report on October 4 alleging that Mahara attempted to rape her. In the FIR, she also charged Mahara of using violence against her.

On September 30, Shahi had accused Mahara of trying to rape her the night before, at her rented apartment in Tinkune. Mahara had then resigned from the post of speaker on October 1 following the allegation.

He was arrested from his official residence in Baluwatar on October 6. Punishment for attempt to rape case is a jail term of three years along with a fine of Rs 30,000.

The case should be filed in thecourt through the office of the district attorney within 25 days following the arrest of the crime suspect.

Police are required to present Mahara before the court seeking extension of his remand to judicial custody.

Senior orthopaedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital Govinda KC has warned of fresh hunger strike from October 30 if the government fails to amend the Medical Education Act as per the agreements reached with him.

Speaking during a press meet organised in the Capital today, KC has given an ultimatum till October 25 to the government to fulfil his demands.

&The government should amend the Medical Education Act as per the agreements reached on 26 July 2018. If it fails then fresh protests will be launched,& he said.

&There is no alternative to launching a fresh protest as the achievements made till now need to be institutionalised,& he added.

Putting forth his six-point demand, KC said that appointment of university officials should be made on the basis of merit and seniority. He had demanded that the government stop the ongoing process of appointment of university officials and has demanded that appointments be made as per the report submitted by the team led by Parasar Koirala, which mentions guidelines on the appointment of university officials.

He has also demanded that the government file fraud cases against the medical colleges that have taken exorbitant fees from medical students. He has sought stern action against them.

&Extra money taken from students should be immediately returned to them,& KC said.

He has demanded that the report submitted by the sub-committee formed to investigate allegations against medical colleges for charging extra fees from students be scrapped immediately.

Parliamentary Education and Health Committee had formed a sub-committee to investigate all 21 medical colleges across the country. The committee however had recommended that the seats and tuition fees of medical colleges be increased.

Experts should be appointed in the commissions working on transitional justice, he demanded. KC has also demanded that MBBS programme be started in Karnali Academy of Health Sciences. He also demanded that the procedure for establishment of government medical colleges in provinces 2 and 4 and in Doti/Dadeldhura, Udaypur, Illam/Panchthar be taken forward.

He also demanded that the treatment cost of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and his health condition be made public. &The prime minister should be made accountable if he has tarnished the image of the rule of law and the judiciary,& he said.

Dr KC who retired today (on the ground of age limit) from the hospital after 26 years of service, however, didn&t specify the venue for his upcoming protest. &The venue could be anywhere in the country,& he said.

KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari is set to leave for Myanmar tomorrow for a five-day state visit.

According to a press statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Bhandari, who has accepted the invitation from President of Myanmar, Win Myint, will hold bilateral talks with her counterpart during her visit.

Similarly, State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi will also call on President Bhandari.

It has also been stated that President Bhandari is scheduled to meet the citizens of Myanmar who are of Nepali origin in Pyin Oo Lwin and will visit Bagan, a UNESCO world heritage site. The President is also going to visit Yangon.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, Foreign Secretary Shanker Das Bairagi, Secretary at the Office of the President, other high ranking officials, and mediapersons will accompany the President during the visit.

President Bhandari and the delegation is reported to return back home on October 20.
