PM unveils statue of Gandhi

In order to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, known in India as the &father of the nation&, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe together with the Indian High Commissioner to Colombo Taranjit Singh Sandhu unveiled a statue of Gandhi at the Temple Trees premises this morning.Gandhibirthday is a major national holiday called Gandhi Jayanti, and it is marked with a prayer for peace, ceremonies and events throughout the country.

UK Foreign State Minister praises reconciliation process in Sri Lanka

Lord Tariq Ahmed of Wimbledon, British Minister of State for Commonwealth, UN and South Asia, commended the efforts taken by the government of President Maithripala Sirisena to strengthen the process of reconciliation amidst the severe challenge posed by the dastardly terrorist attacks on Easter Sunday. He emphasized the need for international cooperation to fight terrorism in all its forms which has become a global threat.

20 candidates place deposits for prez polls:accepting the nominations on 7th

The Chairman of Elections Commissions Mahinda Deshapriya says that 20 candidates have placed their deposits in view of the Presidential Election 2019 so far.Two independent candidates, namely Samaraweera Weeravanni and Ashoka Wadigamangawa along with A.S.P. Liyanage from Sri Lanka Labour Party had made their deposits during the course of yesterday (02).The total number of candidates who had placed their deposits include ten from recognized political parties, and ten independent candidates or members of unrecognized political parties, the Commissionchairman Mahinda Deshapriya stated.

17 candidates place deposits for presidential election

Seventeen candidates have placed their deposits for the Presidential Election 2019 so far, says the Elections Commission.Nine out of this total are from recognized political parties, while eight of them are independent candidates or from unrecognized political parties, the Commissionchairman Mahinda Deshapriya stated.

Accepting deposits for the forthcoming presidential election ends at 12 noon on the 6th of October.The Elections Commission will begin accepting the nominations for the presidential poll from 9.00 am-11.00 am on the 7th of October and objections for the nominations can be submitted from 9.00 am to 11.30 am on the same day.

Meanwhile, the closing date of submitting the applications for the postal voting for the Presidential Election 2019, which was set to end on last Wednesday (30), was extended until midnight on the 04th of October. This decision was taken due to the prevailing inclement weather condition and the ongoing trade union actions.

Cabinet OKs proposal for disabled veterans

Cabinet decided yesterday to approve the proposal presented by Minister Sajith Premadasa to grant the pension currently being paid to disabled war heroes to their spouses after their demise, Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka told the Daily News. UNF Presidential candidate Premadasa had met the protesting veterans on Monday and assured them that he would act quickly to redress their issues, the most critical being the extension of full pensions to spouses after demise of soldier recipient.
