University students to preserve marine ecosystem

Mangroves play a vital role in providing shelter and food for fingerlings of various fish species. Mangroves are instrumental in increasing the fish population of an area. Planting mangroves is also a way to reduce global warming as it captures a lot of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in its quick growth.These are the reason why students of the Department of Accounts at the Faculty of Management and Finance of Colombo University had chosen to plant mangroves in different areas of the western coast of the island. Nearly 50 students from the Accounts Department were seen planting mangroves at the Kalpitiya lagoon recently.

UNFPA assists curb malnutrition

Thanamalwila, Moneragala & The Country Representative of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Brenda Barton, and the Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Sri Lanka, Ritsu Nacken, jointly handed over anthropometric equipment to the Maternal Child Health Clinic in Thanamalwila, Moneragala this week. This was part of the equipment worth Rs 14 million (USD 78,000), handed over to the Family Health Bureau of the Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine.

The Commission will conclude accepting deposits for a presidential hopeful at 12 noon today.

The President says that the brave soldiers have been able to overcome all hostilities against Motherland at all the times.President Maithripala Sirisena expressed these view at the passing out ceremony held at the Katukurunda Special Forces Training School yesterday (05th) morning. A total of 274 officers including 50 junior Police Inspectors, 183 junior Police Constable and 41 female constables who successfully completed the 76th basic training course at Katukurunda Special Forces Training School were passed out yesterday morning.

Drones banned from Rajagiriya, Welikada until Monday

Drones will be banned from the airspace in the Rajagiriya and Welikada areas from today (Oct 5) until Monday, a senior official at the Elections Secretariat said.The official said that the Air Force has been entrusted with the responsibility of taking action against such drones.
