The annual prize giving of Kelaniya Gurukula Vidyalaya was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena Friday (27).On his arrival President was warmly welcomed by the students at the school premises.President handed over certificates and awards to the students those who excelled in many fields.President also joined to witness an exhibition by the students.Governor of the Northern Province Suren Ragavan, member of Parliament Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Principal Anil Geethalal and the staff, students and parents were present on the occasion.

The natural hazards early warning center of the Department of Meteorology today issued a warning on Severe Lightning said that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places inWestern, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central,Uva and North Western provinces and in Mannar and Polonnaruwa districts in the evening or night. It also said that temporarily strong gusty winds up to 70-80kmph are also possible during thundershowers.Therefore the Department of Meteorology advises that people should: Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees. Avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms. Avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms. Avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc. Beware of fallen trees and power lines. For emergency assistance contact the local disaster management authorities.

Due to the atmospheric disturbance in the south-eastern sea area, showery condition over Eastern and Uva provinces is expected to enhance some extent today.Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Eastern and Uva provinces and in Hambantota and Polonnaruwa districts. Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely at some places in these areas.Showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere in the evening or night and fairly heavy falls about 50-75 mm are likely at some places.Several spells of showers can expect in Jaffna, Mullaitivu and Mannar districts in the morning too. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning.
