Afternoon thundershowers in many provinces

There is a high possibility for afternoon thundershowers particularly in Eastern, Uva, North-central provinces and in Vavuniya and Mullaitivu districts during next few days. Therefore, general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Eastern, Uva, North-central and Central provinces and in Vavuniya, Mullaitivu districts after 2.00 pm. Several spells of light showers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces.

EC warns social media to stop hate speech and fake news

The Election Commission yesterday warned representatives of electronic, print and Web media that the transmission of hate speech and false information through their outlets would be met with stern legal action. The 3-member Commission, headed by Commissioner of Elections Mahinda Deshapriya, yesterday met some 50 representatives of major news media organisations including those from internet social media outlets. Representatives of Facebook India, who oversee the networkSri Lankan operations, were also present.

Rupavahini Corporation gazetted under Defense Ministry

A gazette notification has been issued to assign the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) under the Ministry of Defense. Accordingly, the SLRC was assigned under the Defense Ministry with effect from midnight yesterday (09).

Japanese investor to manufacture flexible packaging for Tea Industry

The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka signed an Agreement with Sugano Packing Materials Co., Ltd., a Japanese Company to establish a plant that will be manufacturing flexible packaging that will be utilized by, among other sectors, the local tea industry. The packaging produced in Ja-Ela, Sri Lanka would be mainly flat bottomed bags.

Biggest ever investments in public education, health - PM

The present government has allocated the largest amount of funds for free education and health compared with previous governments, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe pointed out yesterday.The government has also been able to provide adequate physical and human resources to ensure that the education system, previously limited to a selected few, is now accessible to all on an equal footing, the Prime Minister argued, addressing the gathering at the inaugural ceremony of commissioning 500 school buildings throughout the country under the ‘Nearest School, the Best School& programme. At this ceremony, the PM commissioned the Shishyoda National Resources and Information Centre for school children with special needs at Weniwelkola in Kahatuduwa, yesterday.
