Buddhists are capable of ensuring the freedom of other religions - PM

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said that religious freedom within the country will be ensured only if Sinhala Buddhis are protected. &A unitary state, safeguarding the Buddhists and Sinhalese are all combined together. When we go back in history, it is clearly visible that religious freedom within the country will be secure and strengthened only if the Sinhala Buddhists are protected.

Loan scheme to revive tea industry

The Government is to introduce a loan scheme to revive the tea industry, Plantations Minister Ramesh Pathirana said. He said loans up to Rs 500 million would be provided to tea cultivators on a short-term basis, using funds from the Tea Promotion Fund. Tea small holders would also benefit from the scheme as they would be able to pay their workers and modernise their machinery, he said.

Aruwakkalu waste treatment process begins next month

The waste treatment process at Aruwakkalu solid waste management facility is to be commissioned in February, a senior project officer said yesterday.But the transfer of waste to the facility by train would take another six months, that is after completion of the construction of the waste transfer station in Kelaniya.

Court of Inquiry probes aircraft crash
