MIDDLE EAST ENVOYS CALL ON PRESIDENT

Envoys belonging to the Middle East Ambassadors& Forum called on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretary yesterday. Congratulating President Rajapaksa on his recent victory, they assured their continued support and co-operation to the new government in the economic and cultural spheres. They also assured that their countries would work with dedication to improve and further ties with Sri Lanka led by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Ambassadors of Palestine, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, Iraq, Libya and Qatar were among the membership who attended the meeting, a media release from the Presidents Media Division said.

BIA expansion to go ahead with Japanese assistance

Industrial Export, Investment Promotion and Civil Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that work on the expansion of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) will be expedited under Japanese assistance. The relevant Cabinet Paper will be submitted to members of the Cabinet this week,& he added.

Measures to overcome any rice shortage

The government has started a crash programme to process paddy, kept stored in ware houses to overcome any shortage of rice in the local market. According to Anuradhapura District Secretary R.M.Wanninanayake, over 950,000 kilogrammes of paddy have been issued to nine rice mills in the Anuradhapura district as of yesterday. He added that paddy stocks in government ware houses will be issued to rice mills continuously.
