Ghanas cocoa production has dropped drastically, with the 2023/24 season output reaching only 429,323 metric tons. This figure is less than 55% of the average seasonal yield, a significant decline reflecting severe challenges in the sector.Adverse weather, swollen shoot disease, and illegal gold mining have critically impacted production.Swollen shoot disease has devastated approximately 500,000 hectares of cocoa farms.
Illegal mining, known as galamsey, has exacerbated land degradation and diverted labor from cocoa farming.Ghana and Ivory Coast, the top cocoa producers, have both experienced significant shortfalls.Ghanas Cocoa Crisis: A Bitter Reality.

In London, cocoa futures surpassed 5,000 per metric ton, and in New York, they breached $6,000 per metric ton.Smuggling has further reduced Ghanas official cocoa output.
Around 150,000 tons were lost to smuggling last season. This illegal trade exacerbates the supply deficit and affects the countrys ability to meet contractual obligations to international buyers, causing delays in deliveries and market uncertainty. The COCOBOD the Ghana Cocoa Board -has tried to stabilize prices through forward sales but has not always benefited farmers. The boards efforts include rehabilitating diseased farms and working with security to curb smuggling.
However, these measures have not yet ensured long-term recovery.Critics argue that the government needs to enhance transparency and innovate to support farmers and boost productivity.Ghanas Cocoa Crisis: A Bitter RealityGhanaian farmers often feel shortchanged by the pricing mechanisms and the governments handling of the crisis.Calls for fairer pricing and better management practices are growing louder.
The current crisis demands significant reforms and increased farmer support.Without these changes, the livelihoods of millions dependent on cocoa farming are at serious risk. The situation highlights the need for strategic action to secure the future of Ghanas cocoa industry.
