
A cloned yak was born via cesarean section on Thursday at a yak breeding base in Damxung County, southwest Chinas Xizang Autonomous Region, researchers have said.The cloned calf weighed 33.5 kilograms at birth, heavier than many yak newborns, according to the researchers.The calf, which has an entirely black coat, had the ability to stroll and in excellent health.The project started in July 2023 as a joint effort by a research study team from Zhejiang University in east China, the Damxung County federal government and the Institute of Plateau Biology of Xizang Autonomous Region.The researchers utilized whole-genome selection and somatic cell cloning technologies to produce the cloned yak.Fang Shengguo, who led the research study team from Zhejiang University, stated that cloning technology will play a crucial role in improving yak breeds and building a reproducing system for high-altitude livestock in Xizang.Yaks are endemic to the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, acting as both an income essential for regional herding communities and an essential part of the plateaus environment.
