LALITPUR: Police arrested 11 persons from a Jhamsikhel-based restaurant for their alleged involvement in gambling on Friday.

Acting on a tip off, plainclothes police personnel raided Pahuna Bread and Breakfast Restaurant and took the 11 persons into custody.

Cards and Rs 265,000 in cash were also confiscated from the gambling den operated under the guise of a restaurant, said police.

Police said they had stepped up crackdown on illegal gambling during Dashain and Tihar festivals.

KATHMANDU: Police on Thursday arrested a person with 15 kilograms fake silver from Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Umesh Lamsal, in-charge at Maharajgunj-based Metropolitan Police Circle, said Raj Sapkota, a permanent resident of Dhading was found possessing the fake silver during the security check.

Sapkota is the owner of Tilahari Jewellers at Imadol of Mahalaxmi Municipality-11.

The suspect was planning to sell the fake metal to someone. He has been kept in the custody for further investigation, DSP Lamsal said.

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Home Affairs said it had directed Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, National Investigation Department and district administration offices to enforce special security plan during Dashain festivities.

A press release issued by the Home Ministry said that security forces will be mobilised round the clock to maintain law and order during the festivities.

According to Nepal Police, as many as 42,619 personnel were deployed throughout the country in accordance with the special security plan.

Of them, 11,401 security personnel carry weapons. Nepal Police Headquarters has also issued a circular to all its units, directing them not to sanction leave of security personnel, in view of the festival and upcoming visit of the Chinese President Xi Jinping. However, security personnel will be granted maternity and mourning leaves.

The ministry said concerned District Administration Offices, in association with other stakeholder agencies have stepped up market monitoring to control black-marketing, hoarding and sale and distribution of substandard goods at local levels during the festivals. They will also ensure smooth supply of essential goods during Dashain.

Visiting German Vice-minister for Economic Development and Cooperation Norbert Barthle and Province 3 Chief Minister Dormani Poudel today inaugurated the German Technical School in Dhading.

GTS is a well-equipped technical institution set up by the Sheshkant Foundation in cooperation with German NGO Zukunft für Nepal Ostwürttemberg e.V. to provide technical and vocational education and training, in Dhunibesi Municipality of Dhading district.

The metal workshop hall of the GTS has been constructed under the financial assistance of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development together with VOITH, a German multinational corporation based in Heidenheim. Different companies and individuals from the German region Swabian Alb have supported this project that will ensure input from German Voith hydropower and other German firms, according to a press release issue by the Embassy of Germany in Kathmandu.

In Nepal, this project would be a pioneer in providing vocational training to the youth in order to meet high demand for professionals in Nepalhydropower sector. The school will train mechanics and metal workers in close collaboration with the hydropower industry of Nepal following a dual approach inspired by Germanyvocational education and training system.

GTS will provide short-term courses (four to twelve months) as well as long-term courses (three years& diploma), according to the press release.

&Vocational training has a long tradition in Germany. Young people are trained for jobs by providing them theoretical lessons as well as exposure to practice. Usually a student is affiliated with a company and is, therefore, paid a salary while being trained in the company. German investors believe that vocational training with a high degree of in-house training is the key to developing partnerships with Nepali industry,& read the press release.
