Warning for Severe Lightning

Issuing a warning the natural hazards early warning center of the Department of Meteorology said today that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-central and Uva provinces and in Mullaitivu and Vavuniya districts in the evening or night.Temporarily strong gusty winds up to 70-80kmph are also possible during thundershowers it also add.

Therefore the Department of Meteorology advises that people should: Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees. Avoid open areas such as paddy fields, teaplantations and open water bodies duringthunderstorms. Avoid using wired telephones andconnected electric appliances during thunderstorms. Avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc. Beware of fallen trees and power lines. For emergency assistance contact the local disaster management authorities.

Railway strike called off

The indefinite strike action launched by railway trade unions for 12 days was called off a short while ago after a discussion held with President Maithripala Sirisena this morning.Railway Station Masters& Association General Secretary, Janaka Fernando said they met with the National Salaries and Cadre Commission officials under the instructions of President Sirisena where they were promised to fulfil their demands.

Light showers may occur in the coastal areas at Western and Southern provinces and in Puttalam district in the morning too. Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and North-central provinces during the morning. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

President Maithripala Sirisena expressed these view at the passing out ceremony held at the Katukurunda Special Forces Training School Saturday (05th) morning. A total of 274 officers including 50 junior Police Inspectors, 183 junior Police Constable and 41 female constables who successfully completed the 76th basic training course at Katukurunda Special Forces Training School were passed out Saturday morning.

Sri Lanka Police says that the displaying of posters, banners and cutouts related to the forthcoming Presidential Election is prohibited with effect from today (07).Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said as per the provisions of the Presidential Elections Act, the displaying of posters, banners, cutouts and such will be prohibited from today subject to certain exceptions.
