The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), which contributed in a major way to the Humanitarian Operation has a wealth of experience in combating airborne terrorist activities more than any other Air Force in the world, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said. The Prime Minister was speaking at the awarding of commission and flying brevets to officers and Cadet Officers of the Sri Lanka Air Force at China Bay, Trincomalee yesterday (17). Prime Minister Rajapaksa pointed out that the Tri-Forces have a great responsibility towards their country not only during the war and post-war periods.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa held a discussion with Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith and Bishop of Chilaw Rt.Rev. Valence Mendis over the environmental and social issues caused by the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant, at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday. Residents and environmentalists in the area were present.President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday directed that the Lak Vijaya Power Plant in Norochcholai, the countrybiggest contributor to the national power grid, should be operated strictly according to proper technical procedures and environmental standards in order to avoid or minimise its impact on the local environment and surrounding communities. The President issued this directive yesterday at a special meeting he convened at the PresidentOffice with representatives of several affected local communities in Norochcholai together with environmental activists and experts, according to a communique from the PresidentMedia Office.

As per the instructions given by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Inland Revenue Department is now closely monitoring the situations where tax relief benefits do not reach the public and consumers, Commissioner General of Inland Revenue Nadun Guruge said. Addressing the media this morning at the Inland Revenue Department, the Commissioner said that a lot of tax concessions have been introduced by the government to general public in order to boom countryeconomy in short term as well as in long term and the target aspect of the government through these tax concessions would be achieved economic development of the country.

The Government of Korea has decided to provide a grant of US $ 10.96 million for the promotion of tourism industry in Sri Lanka. Ambassador of Korea to Sri Lanka, Heon Lee, said the grant will be given this year.This was revealed during a discussion between the Minister of Industry, Export, Investment Promotion, Tourism and Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranatunga and the Korean Ambassador.

Water supply to Colombo and surrounding areas will be disrupted for 22-hours commencing from 9am tomorrow (Jan.18) till 7.00 am on Sunday (Jan.19), the National Water Supply and Drainage Board said.The Water Board stated that the water cut is imposed due to a power interruption by the Ceylon Electricity Board.
