EC receives more than 3,600 prez poll-related complaints

The Elections Commission has received a total of 3,627 complaints from October 8 toNov.11 regarding election law violations and violent activities, the Commission said.It said 27 violent activities had been reported to the National Election Complaint Management Centre and District Election Complaint Management Centres while3,494election law violations were reported to the respective centres.106 other cases had also been reported.

Cigarette sales down by 11% in 3Q

Sri LankaCeylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC) in their latest quarterly financials outline that the Government increasing the Excise duty on cigarettes in August 2018 and March 2019 lead to a price increase of legal cigarettes.As a result, the Ceylon Tobacco Company's sales volume for the third quarter ended 30th September 2019 had reduced by 11.0% in comparison to the same period last year.

No fuel price revision this month

The monthly fuel price revision would not come into effect this month due to no fluctuations in fuel prices in the world market, the Finance Ministry said They said the committee formulated to determine the fuel prices did not meet on Sunday. Accordingly, the fuel price revision which came into effect on September 10 would continue till December 10.

Sri Lanka air quality returning to normal

COLOMBO, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's air quality is soon returning to normal as the air quality index has reached moderate levels from above 100 recorded last week, the state owned National Building Research Organization (NBRO) said here Monday.Senior Scientist at the NBRO, Sarath Premasiri told Xinhua that the air quality index over the island had lowered to a moderate 60 to 70 by the weekend from the above 100 recorded last week and it no longer posed a health risk on the citizens.

Prevention of Offences relating to Sports Bill passed unanimously

The Prevention of Offences relating to The Sports Bill with the objective of investigating and preventing match fixing, corruption, illegal manipulation and illegal betting, under which, if found guilty of the offences mentioned in the Bill will be charged a fine not exceeding 100 million or a sentencing not exceeding 10 years in prison or both was passed unanimously during the special sitting called yesterday, 11th November 2019.
