A sliver of hope has emerged from a potential dengue vaccine study, as this mosquito-borne viral disease rampages across the country and sends hundreds of men, women and children to hospitals in Sri Lanka. The TAK-003 potential vaccine — which underwent testing in Sri Lanka as part of a multi-centre clinical trial — was ‘efficacious& (successful in producing the desired effect) against virologically-confirmed dengue fever (DF) among healthy children and adolescents 4-16 years of age, irrespective of previous dengue exposure.Simply put, the potential vaccine which comes in the form of a two-dose subcutaneous injection, was &generally safe& and &well-tolerated&. It &demonstrated& protection in these children regardless of previous dengue exposure, it is understood.

Sri Lanka, with backing from the 120-member Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), again issued a scathing criticism of the United Nations over what it called a matter of questionable procedure and unjust treatment by the Department of Peace Operations in unilaterally adjusting the countrycontribution to UN deployments abroad. The DPO sought to link its decision not to replace a contingent of peacekeepers on rotation to an internal appointment made by Sri Lanka as a sovereign right, thereby challenging the Head of State of a member country, said Kshenuka Senewiratne, Sri LankaPermanent Representative to the UN in New York.
