Western Province continues to be the major contributor to Sri Lanka's economy

As in previous years, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Sri Lanka's Western Province continues to be the highest contributor to the national GDP, its share increasing to 38.5 percent in 2018 from 37.9 percent in 2017.According to the Provincial Gross Domestic Product (PGDP) estimated by the Statistics Department of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) for 2018, Central and North Western provinces were respectively the second and the third highest contributors, to the Rs. 14,450 bn national GDP in 2018.

The highest increase in PGDP share on year-on-year basis was reported in Western province. The only other province that reported an increase was North Central province.The shares of Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces decreased in 2018, while the shares of North Western, Southern, Eastern and Northern provinces remained unchanged.Services activities played a dominant role in all provinces with a contribution of more than 50 per cent to the PGDP.

Navy continues flood relief operations

Relentless torrential rain has caused floods in several regions of the country as of now. Accordingly, the Navy has already deployed a number of emergency response teams to provide relief to the flood victims in those areas. Incidentally, 24 relief teams with 13 dinghies have been sent out to Southern and Western provinces to rescue people displaced by flash floods. These teams are currently engaged to help community slashed by inclement weather in Walallavita and Bulathsinhala in the Kalutara district, Nagoda, Thawalama, Imaduwa, Udugama and Poddala in the Galle district, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda, Malimbada and Akuressa in the Matara district and Kotikawatta in the Colombo district.

Atmospheric conditions are getting favorable over the island

Atmospheric conditions are getting favorable for evening thundershowers over most parts of the island.Several spells of showers will occur in Western, Southern and North-western provinces. Leave of SLTB employees cancelled

Leave of all employees of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) have been cancelled owing to the planned trade union action by railway trade unions, SLTB Chairman Upali Marasinghe said.Accordingly the leave of all SLTB staff including drivers, conductors, and technical staff have been temporarily cancelled.Railway trade unions have announced that they will launch a strike based on salary disparities, from midnight yesterday (25).

War heroes& pension, salary issues solved - Minister

Tourist arrivals returning to normal - SLTPB

Tourist arrivals, which plummeted after the Easter Sunday bomb attacks on hotels and churches, is gradually returning to normal, chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) Kishu Gomes says.Kishu Gomes said over 2.3 million tourists arrived in Sri Lanka last year and revenues of US $ 4.4 billion were generated. This year 3 million tourists and US$ 5 billion income were expected.
