IMF projects GDP to improve to 3.5% in 2020

The IMF revised the Real GDP growth to 2.7 percent in 2019 and it is projected to improve to 3.5 percent in 2020, as tourist arrivals and related activities gradually recover. Inflation is expected to remain stable at around 4.5 percent during 2019-20.Despite the recent fall in tourist arrivals and remittances, the current account balance is projected to improve to 2.6 percent of GDP in 2019 on the back of lower imports and stronger exports supported by the exchange rate correction in late 2018.Trade and investment liberalization, SOE reforms, and stepped-up anti-corruption efforts will be important to bolster Sri Lanka's competitiveness and medium-term growth, the team said.

Prevailing rain condition to reduce from tomorrow

Prevailing showery condition over the south-western part of the island is expected to reduce some extent from tomorrow (26).Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and Mannar, Jaffna districts. Schools in Galle Matara to remain closed for two more days

All government schools in Galle and Matara districts will be kept closed as a result of the prevailing inclement weather that has affected many areas in these two districts, the Southern Province Governor Hemal Gunasekara stated. Accordingly, the schools will remain closed on the 26th and 27th of September as well.Schools in Galle and Matara districts were closed yesterday (24) and today (25) owing to the showery condition in these two districts.
