President intervenes to grant lifetime salary for disabled war heroes

The Cabinet Memorandum submitted by President Maithripala Sirisena as the Minister of Defence, to grant lifetime salaries for disabled war heroes has been approved by the Cabinet.Accordingly, the Cabinet has given approval to grant all the members of the tri-forces, Police and Special Task Force a salary equal to their last salary during their life time.

Over 45,000 affected by adverse weather

Heavy rains have resulted in a minor flood situation in several districts, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said today.DMC Spokesman Pradeep Kodipiliy said minor floods were reported from Badegama and Thawalama in the Galle Districts and in Millakanda, Agalawatta, Wallalawita and Bulathsingala in the Kalutara Districts. A minor flood situation was also reported from Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, Akuressa, Devinuwara and Pasgoda in the Matara District.

He said nearly 45,000 people have been affected by floods in these areas though ill effects of the heavy rains have been less this time because the residents in vulnerable areas were asked to be vigilant.Rainfall exceeding 200mm were recorded from Katunayake, Badegama and Negombo. However, a Meteorology Department said this was the first time that a rainfall exceeding 200mm was reported since 2016. However the Department said rainfall of 200mm is no longer considered unusual. Katunayake had received a rainfall of 272mm, Badegama in Galle District 210mm, Negombo 230mm, Ratmalana 158mm, Angoda 175mm while Colombo also received a rainfall of 140mm.

Sri Lanka squad leave for Pakistan

The Sri Lanka team were attacked in Lahore in 2009. Since then most international teams have refused to tour the South Asian country, leaving Pakistan to play nearly all their &home& games in the United Arab Emirates. Ten senior players citing security concerns have opted out of the tour comprising three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 matches beginning on Friday.

A/L practical exams to be rescheduled

The Department of Examinations states that due to the inclement weather the students who are unable to sit for the G.C.E. Advanced Level practical exams will be given another day if required. Examination Commissioner General Sanath Pujitha stated that another date would be provided once the weather improves.

The longest cycle race in Sri Lanka the ‘SLT Speedup Sawariya-2019&, Menrace will commence from Galle Face Green today (24) commencing at 8.30 a.m.The race will travel through Panadura, Ratnapura, Embilipitiya, Wellawaya, Bandarawela, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Vauniya, Trincomalee marking the finish at Dambulla on September 28.

Meanwhile, the two-day Womenrace will commence on September 27 starting from Colombo and the competitors would proceed through Kurunegala and finish on September 28 at Dambulla.In addition, the first-ever junior one-day race will be worked off on September 28 starting from Dambulla.

Navy transferred 417 persons to safe locations

The Navy, in responding to flooding reported across the country following the inclement weather, has deployed Navy relief teams in various regions in the country, going by the directives of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva.
